The utilization of nuclear technology goes far beyond the goal of low-carbon energy. These diverse uses put nuclear technology at the center of the world to achieve sustainable development.

West & Central Europe

Belgium has 5 operable nuclear reactors, Finland has 5 operable nuclear reactors, France has 56 operable nuclear reactors. The Netherlands has a single operable nuclear reactor, Spain has 7 operable nuclear reactors. Sweden has 6 operable nuclear reactors, Switzerland has 4 operable nuclear reactor. The United Kingdom has 9 operable nuclear reactors. In West & Central Europe there are 93 reactors in total.

Central and East Europe, Russia

Armenia has a single nuclear power reactor, Belarus has 2 operable nuclear power reactors, Bulgaria has 2 operable nuclear reactors. The Czech Republic has 6 operable nuclear reactors, Hungary has 4 operable nuclear reactors. Romania has 2 operable nuclear reactors, Russia has 36 operable nuclear reactors.

Slovakia has 4 operable nuclear reactors, Slovenia has a single operable nuclear reactor, Ukraine has 15 operable nuclear reactors. Turkey commenced construction of its first nuclear power plant in April 2018, with start of operation expected in 2024. In East and Central Europe, Rusia there are 74 reactors in total.

Asia

Bangladesh started construction on the first of two planned Russian VVER-1200 reactors in 2017, China has 55 operable nuclear reactors. India has 23 operable nuclear reactors, Japan has 33 operable nuclear reactors. South Korea has 26 operable nuclear reactors, Pakistan has 6 operable nuclear reactors. In Asia there are 144 reactors in total.

Africa

Egypt started construction in total 4 nuclear reactors plan, South Africa has 2 operable nuclear reactors, In Africa there are 6 reactors in total.

Middle East

Iran has a single operable nuclear reactor, The United Arab Emirates has 3 operable nuclear reactors. In Middle East there are 4 reactors in total.

Decreased Reactor Usage Facility

A downward trend in reactor usage is occurring in some countries for several reasons. As of June 2024, 210 nuclear reactors globally have been permanently shut down. The United States leads with 41 reactors decommissioned, followed by the United Kingdom with 36. Shutdowns involve transitioning the reactor into a subcritical state according to technical specifications, securing the reactor control mechanisms, and fulfilling other operational criteria[3].

Countries Intention To Use Nuclear Power Plants

Around 28 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) member states that do not currently have nuclear power plants are “considering, planning, or actively working” to incorporate nuclear into their energy mix. One of the key challenges for many countries is the scale of their power grid infrastructure.

Building larger infrastructure is not always an attractive option to replace existing power plants, involving permitting issues, social issues, technology, licensing, and human resource requirements.
