Sejarah PLTP Kamojang berawal pada tahun 1918, ketika wabah flu Spanyol melanda dunia. JB Van Dijk, seorang pendidik di HBS Bandung, Jawa Barat, memegang peran utama dalam pembentukan PLTP Kamojang. Ia menjadi pionir dalam pengembangan energi panas bumi pada masa kolonial dan mengusulkan pendirian PLTP Kamojang setelah menulis artikel Krachtbronnen in Italie atau “Sumber Kekuatan di Italia” dalam majalah Koloniale Studien.
Inspirasi Van Dijk muncul setelah mengetahui keberhasilan Italia dalam memanfaatkan panas bumi untuk menghasilkan energi listrik di Larderello, Italia Tengah. Ia kemudian mendorong Pemerintah Hindia Belanda untuk mengikuti langkah Italia dan memanfaatkan potensi panas bumi di Indonesia. Awalnya, gagasannya dihadapi skeptisisme pemerintah dan mendapat kritik tajam dari banyak pihak yang meragukan kelayakannya.

Pengembangan Panas Bumi di PLTP Kamojang
Meskipun menghadapi berbagai tantangan awal dan penolakan terhadap gagasan mendirikan PLTP Kamojang, proyek ini membutuhkan waktu hingga tahun 1926 sebelum Pemerintah Hindia Belanda akhirnya mengalokasikan dana untuk melakukan pengeboran di wilayah Kamojang. Pengeboran ini dilakukan oleh The Netherland East Indies Vulcanological Survey, sebuah perusahaan yang dimiliki oleh Hindia Belanda. Beberapa tahun kemudian, dengan kerja sama Geothermal Energy New Zealand Ltd, perusahaan asal Selandia Baru, eksplorasi panas bumi di Kamojang pun dimulai. Meski demikian, perjalanan proyek PLTP Kamojang tidaklah mudah.
Perjalanan panjang menuju penggunaan energi panas bumi di Kamojang tidaklah mudah. Meski begitu, tekad dan usaha keras akhirnya membuahkan hasil pada tahun 1982. Saat itulah PLTP Kamojang Unit 1 dengan kapasitas 130 MW berhasil beroperasi. Keberhasilan ini menjadi tonggak penting dalam sejarah Indonesia yang telah merdeka. Hal ini mengikuti inspirasi Italia yang telah diuraikan oleh Van Dijk. Dalam lima tahun berikutnya, PLTP Kamojang Unit 2 dan Unit 3 juga mulai beroperasi, memperkuat sistem kelistrikan Indonesia di wilayah Jawa Barat. Dengan upaya ini, negara semakin mandiri dalam pemenuhan kebutuhan energi.
Kapasitas dan Kontribusi PLTP Kamojang
PLTP Kamojang adalah pembangkit listrik dengan kapasitas daya total mencapai 140 MW. Terhubung dengan PLTP Darajat (55 MW) dan PLTP Gunung Salak (180 MW), PLTP Kamojang Power Generation O&M Services Unit (POMU) mencapai total kapasitas 375 MW. Dengan 7 unit PLTP dari PLTP Darajat dan PLTP Gunung Salak, PLTP Kamojang POMU berperan penting dalam sistem kelistrikan nasional yang dikelola oleh PT PLN (Persero). PT Indonesia Power, anak perusahaan PLN, bertanggung jawab atas operasi dan pemeliharaannya untuk memastikan pasokan listrik yang handal yang mendukung masyarakat Indonesia.
Di bawah pengelolaan Indonesia Power, PLTP Kamojang POMU telah menunjukkan kinerja yang sangat baik. Pada tahun 2020, mereka berhasil memproduksi sekitar 2.778 MWh energi. PLTP Kamojang telah diakui sebagai salah satu pembangkit listrik tenaga panas bumi terbaik di Indonesia, dan bahkan berperan aktif dalam berbagi pengetahuan dan pengalaman dengan PLTP lain di seluruh negeri.
Keberlanjutan dan Tanggung Jawab Lingkungan
Selama beberapa tahun terakhir, PLTP Kamojang POMU telah aktif mengembangkan program-program tanggung jawab sosial dan lingkungan. Salah satu inisiatif utama adalah budidaya kopi pelag bersama masyarakat di sekitar wilayah operasinya. Tanaman kopi ditanam di lereng Gunung Papandayan oleh mitra-mitra yang dibina oleh PLTP Kamojang. Selain memberikan manfaat ekonomi dengan produksi kopi, program ini juga berperan dalam pencegahan longsor dan menciptakan area penangkapan uap panas bumi yang berkelanjutan.
Tidak hanya itu, PLTP Kamojang POMU juga meluncurkan program budidaya ikan nila. Program ini melibatkan pemuda desa yang tinggal di sekitar wilayah operasinya, mendorong lahirnya sosok-sosok yang dihormati dalam masyarakat untuk mendukung pertumbuhan ekonomi. Program ini tidak hanya berhenti pada budidaya ikan nila, tetapi juga mencakup pengolahan lebih lanjut yang menghasilkan produk ikan nila goreng kemasan, meningkatkan nilai tambah dari program ini.
Selain itu, PLTP Kamojang POMU juga telah mengembangkan program budidaya dan pengolahan kopi Kamojang berbasis masyarakat, yang melibatkan kelompok-kelompok yang rentan seperti janda. Program ini menjadi salah satu pilar dalam meningkatkan perekonomian masyarakat sekitar.
