Salah satu sektor yang menyumbang emisi sangat signifikan adalah energi, khususnya transportasi. Pada 2018, jumlah emisi GRK dari sektor energi mencapai 595 Juta tCO2 e (ton setara CO2 ) dan dari jumlah tersebut sebanyak 28% berasal dari sektor transportasi massa.

Pemerintah melalui Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi (BPPT) menyebut pada tahun 2035 diperkirakan akan ada 5,7 juta kendaraan listrik di Indonesia.
Menurut deputi BPPT Bidang Teknologi Informasi Energi dan Material (TIEM) total jumlah tersebut terdiri dari 1,2 juta kendaraan listrik roda 4, dan 4,5 juta kendaraan listrik roda 2, namun itu baru sebatas perkiraan.
Hingga tahun 2020 belum ada catatan data Lembaga resmi Pemerintah yang mengeluarkan angka jumlah kendaraan listrik yang meramaikan jalanan Nusantara.
Hal senada juga dilayangkan oleh Kepala Staf Kepresidenan, menurutnya ada empat hal yang menjadi faktor utama alasan pengembangan kendaraan listrik harus didorong dan direalisasikan.
Pertama, adalah dengan kendaraan listrik negara dapat menghemat impor minyak bumi sehingga nantinya akan menekan defisit migas Indonesia.
Dengan menggunakan kendaraan listrik akan lebih ramah lingkungan dan menjauhkan generasi berikutnya dari emisi bahaya polusi asap.
Disamping itu, kendaraan listrik akan memberikan keuntungan bagi Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), sebab pada malam hari penggunaan listrik berkurang sehingga utilitas PLN juga berkurang. Hal tersebut dapat dimanfaatkan dengan kendaraan listrik yang mengisi dayanya.
