Survei peringkat ini diselenggarakan oleh QS World University Rankings (WUR) dalam kategori Sustainability 2024 yang diikuti hingga 1.400 universitas seluruh dunia. Aspek penilaian diantaranya environmental impact, social impact, dan governance.

Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) yang merupakan salah satu pelopor universitas terkemuka Indonesia berhasil menerapkan tata kelola dan sistem berkelanjutan. Kira-kira apa urgensi lembaga pendidikan harus menerapkan sistem keberlanjutan? Simak penjelasan selengkapnya!

Mengapa Pendidikan Berkelanjutan Penting?

Sobat EBT Heroes istilah Sustainability atau Berkelanjutan sudah tidak asing kita dengar. Mengapa Pendidikan Berkelanjutan perlu diterapkan?

Sustainability adalah suatu kegiatan atau gerakan secara aktif dalam rangka meminimalisir dan tidak memberikan dampak buruk bagi manusia dan lingkungan. Tujuan suistainability adalah menciptakan lingkungan yang minim tereksploitasi hingga dapat bisa terjaga di masa yang akan datang.

1. Membangun Self-Awareness

“Pendidikan Keberlanjutan menumbuhkan dan membangun pola pikir kesadaran terhadap suatu permasalahan lingkungan.”

Pendidikan keberlanjutan dapat diterapkan di universitas dengan tujuan membangun kesadaran dalam menjaga lingkungan sehingga akan berpengaruh terhadap tindakan apa yang kita pilih dalam kehidupan sehari-hari

2. Mengembangkan Kemampuan Berpikir Kritis dan Pemecahan Masalah

Permasalahan lingkungan Indonesia seperti pemanasan global dan banjir disebabkan oleh banyak faktor kompleks, seperti kebijakan dan tata kelola dalam pembangunan, penggunaan sumber daya dan energi, dan lainnya.

Hal ini menjadi tantangan bagi pelajar atau mahasiswa untuk belajar berpikir kritis dan memecahkan masalah hingga menemukan solusi dari berbagai aspek sehingga dapat diimplementasikan kehidupan.

3. Mencetak Generasi Pengembangan Energi Berkelanjutan

Pendidikan dapat berperan penting dalam perubahan perilaku dan tindakan yang diambilnya, dengan adanya pendidikan berkelanjutan akan menumbuhkan minat dan mencetak generasi yang mampu mengembangkan dan menggunakan energi berkelanjutan. Indonesia saat ini secara aktif dalam upaya melakukan pengembangan energi terbarukan, di antaranya yaitu tenaga surya, tenaga air, biomassa, dan lainnya.

Menurut databoks, Kapasitas EBT Indonesia berikutnya berasal dari bioenergy (24,5%), geothermal atau energi panas bumi (18,72%), solar energy (energi surya) (2,48%), dan wind energy (tenaga angin) (1,22%). Hal ini dibutuhkan para ilmuwan dan teknisi untuk bisa bekerja sama membangun pasokan energi untuk bangsa.

Jumlah penduduk Indonesia hingga kini lebih dari dua ratus juta hidup dalam kegiatannya melakukan berbagai aktivitas menghasilkan emisi. Hal ini berpengaruh besar terhadap perubahan iklim, yaitu pemanasan global. Pembangunan dan pengembangan yang dilakukan saat ini harus memperhatikan lingkungan dan keberlanjutan pada berbagai aspek kehidupan, salah satunya pada sektor pendidikan.

Universitas sebagai tingkat pendidikan tertinggi bertujuan sebagai implementasi fungsi lembaga pendidikan dalam memenuhi kebutuhan masyarakat terhadap ilmu pengetahuan dan keterampilan. Dalam hal ini, muncul peran agent of change yang merupakan definisi mahasiswa sesungguhnya bagi bangsa dan negara.

Universitas sebagai wadah utama dalam pengembangan dan sumber ilmu pengetahuan dapat dijadikan sebagai akses pembelajaran dalam membangun pendidikan berkelanjutan.

Perubahan tidak harus dengan gerakan yang besar. Namun, dapat dilakukan dengan langkah yang strategis melihat kebutuhan yang ada di lingkungan sekitar. Berikut ini tiga langkah strategis yang dapat diterapkan untuk membangun perguruan tinggi atau kampus berkelanjutan

1. Kurikulum Pendidikan Berkelanjutan

Pendidikan berkelanjutan tidak hanya soal menangani masalah lingkungan, tetapi memerlukan pengetahuan penyebab, pengelolaan, dan upaya dalam pencegahannya. Pendidikan berkelanjutan mencakup aspek lingkungan, ekonomi, dan peran sosial yang saling berkaitan.

Kurikulum pendidikan berkelanjutan dapat dibangun dengan adanya program pelatihan dan pembelajaran pemanfaatan energi terbarukan, diskusi mengenai masalah lingkungan lokal, serta diskusi berupa gagasan solusi yang ditawarkan. Pembelajaran berkelanjutan dapat dikemas secara menarik melalui ajang perlombaan dan sejenisnya.

Pendidikan berkelanjutan sebaiknya diterapkan sedini mungkin agar terbiasa dan terbentuk kebiasaan berkelanjutan untuk jangka waktu yang panjang.

2. Menciptakan Budaya Berkelanjutan

  • Paperless office : Menurut sumber CNBCIndonesia, Sistem Informasi Pengelolaan Sampah Nasional (SIPSN) pada tahun 2022, kertas masuk dalam kategori lima jenis sampah terbanyak dengan persentase 11,04 persen. Aktivitas pembelajaran dalam bentuk kuliah seringkali menggunakan kertas menjadi sumber kegiatan belajar dan mengajar sehingga langkah peralihan pengurangan kertas (paperless office) dapat diimplementasikan.
  • Pengelolaan sampah : Menerapkan budaya berkelanjutan di kampus seperti dalam pengelolaan sampah menerapkan 3R (Reduce, Reuse, dan Recycle). Kemudian, pembuangan sampah berdasarkan kategori seperti sampah organik dan sampah anorganik.
  • Pendekatan ilmu berkelanjutan : Pada jurusan di universitas terkhusus MIPA yang tidak lepas dari kegiatan praktikum seperti bahan kimia yang tidak jarang bersifat toxic atau berbahaya bagi lingkungan. Jika tidak dilakukan pengelolaan lebih lanjut maka menghasilkan limbah sehingga membuat masalah pencemaran lingkungan. Salah satu pendekatan berkelanjutan yang dapat diterapkan, yaitu dengan pendekatan green chemistry. Green chemistry adalah upaya untuk meminimalisir atau mencari alternatif bahan kimia yang ramah lingkungan namun memiliki tingkat kinerja yang sama.
  • Penggunaan energi terbarukan : Pengembangan energi terbarukan dapat dilakukan di lingkungan sekitar dengan memperhatikan berbagai aspek seperti wilayah, fasilitas yang mendukung, serta melihat potensial dari suatu daerah. Langkah pertama dengan menggunakan energi terbarukan sebagai pemasok listrik dalam kegiatan pembelajaran di universitas. Kampus dapat mengadakan kegiatan bersama mahasiswa sebagai bentuk implementasi dari kegiatan pembelajaran pendidikan berkelanjutan.
