Environmental issues are still an important issue today. Environmental damage cannot be separated from activities carried out by humans. One of the environmental problems that continue to this day is the waste problem. The problem of waste is still a big problem that must be addressed immediately to prevent widespread environmental damage. Wise human behaviour in consuming a product, as well as efforts to manage the waste produced, are important steps in controlling environmental damage due to waste.
One of them is Demak, an area that holds a program for exchanging waste with plant seeds. The Forum Demak Hijau (FDH) has a unique way of inviting the people of Demak to protect their environment. This method works by exchanging plastic bottle waste with plant seeds.
This program received great enthusiasm from the community. This is evidenced by the large number of plant seeds that have been exchanged for plastic bottle waste. As many as 1,200 plant seeds were used up in less than 2 hours. People are willing to queue in front of the Demak Regency Environmental Service to exchange used plastic bottles for the desired plant seeds.
The activity of exchanging plastic bottles with plant seeds is able to arouse public interest in participating in maintaining the natural environment free from plastic waste. This is evidenced by the many residents who come with plastic bottles even though the stock of seeds has run out.
This activity was organized by the Forum Demak Hijau to celebrate the anniversary of the Demak district and the 6th anniversary of FDH. To celebrate the anniversary, FDH took the initiative to carry out activities to save the environment from waste.
In addition, plastic bottle waste can have a negative impact on environmental residues. This is because the process of decomposing plastic bottle waste takes hundreds to thousands of years and will become hazardous waste. Then, plastic bottle waste that is thrown carelessly into rivers can also cause flooding because it will clog waterways.
Therefore, FDH initiated an activity to exchange bottled waste for seeds. This activity is carried out to motivate and invite people to save nature from plastic waste
The mechanism for exchanging plastic bottle waste with plant seeds is based on the size and type of seed. 3 bottles of 600 ml are exchanged for 1 vegetable plant and 4 bottles for 1 flower plant. Then, for 3 bottles of 1.5 litres, it is exchanged for 1 tree seed, and 4 bottles are exchanged for 1 fruit seed.
Thousands of plastic bottles were collected as a result of this activity. Then, the collected plastic bottle waste will be deposited in the collector. In the future, it is hoped that cooperation with other parties who have plastic crushing machines will be carried out.
