Namun, pengelolaan sampah organik di Indonesia masih belum optimal, sehingga menimbulkan berbagai masalah lingkungan dan sosial. Sampah organik yang tidak dikelola dengan baik dapat menimbulkan berbagai dampak negatif bagi lingkungan dan kesehatan manusia. Beberapa dampak tersebut misalnya: menghasilkan cairan leachate yang berbahaya, menghasilkan gas metana, menjadi sumber penyakit menular, dan menyebabkan bau tidak sedap dan mengganggu estetika lingkungan. Berangkat dari permasalahan tersebut, maka pemanfaatan sampah organik sebagai biogas adalah upaya yang tepat.

Melansir situs Pertamina Gas, energi biogas diperoleh dengan cara mengurai limbah-limbah organik melalui proses bernama anaerobik digester di ruang kedap udara. Dalam proses kimia tersebut dihasilkan gas metana (CH4), karbondioksida (CO2), dan beberapa kandungan gas yang jumlahnya kecil diantaranya hidrogen (H2), hidrogen sulfida (H2S), amonia (NH3) serta nitrogen (N) yang kandungannya sangat kecil. Dari semua unsur tersebut, hanya gas metana (CH4) yang dimanfaatkan sebagai bahan bakar Biogas. Energi yang terkandung dalam biogas tergantung dari konsentrasi metana (CH4). Semakin tinggi kandungan metana maka semakin besar kandungan energi (nilai kalor) pada biogas, dan sebaliknya semakin kecil kandungan metana (CH4) semakin kecil nilai kalor. Dengan memanfaatkan sampah organik sebagai bahan baku biogas, diharapkan rumah tangga bisa menghemat pengeluaran dan mendapatkan sumber energi baru yang lebih ramah lingkungan. Selain itu, solusi ini juga cocok untuk desa-desa terpencil yang sulit mendapatkan infrastruktur energi utama, sehingga bisa meningkatkan kemandirian energi mereka.

Sebelum kita membahas tentang teknik atau cara membuat biogas, kita perlu mengetahui terlebih dahulu jenis-jenis biogas yang ada. Biogas bisa dibuat dari berbagai macam sumber, misalnya dari limbah kotoran hewan, seperti sapi atau dari limbah kotoran domestik atau sampah rumah tangga.

  • Kotoran Sapi adalah limbah organik yang berasal dari hewan ternak sapi. Kotoran ini mengandung bahan organik yang bisa diuraikan oleh bakteri anaerob menjadi gas metana dan karbondioksida. Selain itu, bahan ini juga memiliki perbandingan karbon-nitrogen yang sesuai untuk proses pembuatan biogas. Kotoran sapi bisa dicampur dengan air dengan perbandingan 1:1 dan dimasukkan ke dalam reaktor.
  • Sampah rumah tangga merupakan limbah organik yang berasal dari aktivitas sehari-hari di rumah, seperti sisa makanan, sayuran, buah, dan kulitnya. Sampah ini juga bisa diuraikan oleh bakteri anaerob menjadi gas metana dan karbondioksida. Bahan ini bisa dicacah atau dipress untuk mengurangi volumenya dan dimasukkan ke dalam reaktor.
  • Feses manusia bisa disebut sebagai limbah organik yang berasal dari buangan manusia. Feses juga mengandung bahan organik yang bisa diuraikan oleh bakteri anaerob menjadi gas metana dan karbondioksida. Bahan ini bisa dikumpulkan dari septic tank dan dimasukkan ke dalam reaktor.

Biogas terbentuk dari proses penguraian bahan-bahan organik oleh bakteri anaerob (bakteri yang hidup tanpa udara). Secara umum, semua jenis bahan organik yang diuraikan dapat menghasilkan gas ini, tetapi hanya bahan organik yang padat dan cair homogen, seperti kotoran urin hewan ternak yang sesuai untuk sistem yang sederhana. Ada tiga jenis bahan baku yang berpotensi untuk dikembangkan sebagai bahan baku biogas di Indonesia, yaitu kotoran hewan dan manusia, sampah organik, dan limbah cair. Berikut langkah-langkah sederhana pembuatan biogas rumah tangga:

  1. Campur sampah organik dan air dengan perbandingan 1 : 1 (bahan biogas)
  2. Tuang bahan ini ke dalam reaktor melalui lubang pengisian sebanyak 2.000 liter, kemudian biarkan proses produksi biogas berlangsung di dalam reaktor.
  3. Memperhatikan nilai pH atau derajat keasaman. Nilai pH yang ideal adalah 7. Maka dari itu, jika pH>8, sebaiknya ditambahkan kapur untuk mengurangi derajat keasaman yang tinggi. Jika pH terlalu rendah atau pH<5, perlu tambahan kotoran hewan tanpa campuran air ke dalam tangki.
  4. Setelah sekitar 10 hari reaktor dan penampung biogas akan tampak bengkak dan keras karena terisi gas yang dihasilkan. Biogas sudah siap digunakan sebagai bahan bakar dan kompor gas dapat dinyalakan.
  5. Sesekali reaktor digerakkan supaya terjadi penguraian yang maksimal dan gas yang terbentuk di bagian bawah naik ke atas, lakukan juga pada setiap pengisian reaktor.
  6. Pengisian bahan biogas berikutnya dapat dilakukan setiap hari, yaitu sebanyak + 40 liter setiap pagi dan sore hari.
  7. Sisa pengolahan bahan biogas berupa sludge (lumpur) secara otomatis akan keluar dari reaktor setiap kali dilakukan pengisian bahan . Sisa hasil pengolahan bahan ini tersebut dapat digunakan langsung sebagai pupuk organik, baik dalam keadaan basah maupun kering.
