Darmawan explained that as of the third quarter of 2024, PLN had utilized 3 million tons of biomass through its co-firing program for 46 coal-fired power plants, reducing carbon emissions by 3.2 million tons of CO2e. The utilization of this biomass also generates economic value for the community, contributing up to Rp2 trillion per year and benefiting approximately 250,000 people.

PLN Creates Community-Based Biomass Environment in NTT

PT PLN (Persero) East Nusa Tenggara Territorial Unit (PLN UIW NTT), through the PLN Electricity Generation Unit (UPK Flores), in collaboration with UMKM Putra Linjo, initiated the planting of 10,000 tree seedlings in Keliwumbu Village, Maurole District, Ende Regency.

This program is part of PLN’s Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL PLN) initiative. In addition to supporting environmental sustainability, it also aims to establish an Energy Plantation Forest (HTE) to provide raw materials for producing biomass pellets and woodchips for the Ropa PLTU co-firing program. The tree planting initiative in Keliwumbu Town is part of PLN’s TJSL program, providing 10,000 tree seedlings planted on idle land owned by members of the Putra Linjo UMKM group. The assistance includes 4,000 red Kaliandra seedlings, 3,000 Gamal seedlings, and 3,000 Lamtoro seedlings.

General Manager of PLN UID South and Central Kalimantan, Ahmad Syauki, said that this planting initiative also involved local Village-Owned Enterprises (BUMDes).

“On sake of PLN, I would like to thank the Central Kalimantan Common Government, particularly the Kapuas Rule Government and LPPM Palangkaraya College who taken an interest in making this program a victory,” said Syauki.

Meanwhile, Kapuas District Secretary Septedy strongly supports the development of biomass ecosystems for co-firing at the Pulang Pisau PLTU. This initiative is not only environmentally friendly but also has significant economic value for the community.

“Hence, we have inquired the PMD Benefit and the Farming Benefit to grow the planting of Gamal trees in this area. PLN EPI is prepared to purchase all the comes about delivered, giving a wide opportunity for the community to extend their salary through planting Gamal trees,” included Septedy.
