- Bekasi is among the 10 areas with the highest flood risk in West Java.
- Continuous heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding, with water levels reaching up to 3 meters.
- Mitigation efforts must be improved to prevent similar disasters in the future.
The flooding that has affected Bekasi in recent years has become a serious issue for its residents. This flooding is not just a mere accumulation of water but can reach alarming levels. According to reports from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Bekasi is listed among the 10 regions with the highest flood disaster risk in West Java. In 2023, the flood risk index for Bekasi District reached 21.83, while Bekasi City recorded an index of 20.52. Any score above 12 is categorized as a high flood risk.
Causes of Flooding in Bekasi
- High Rainfall
The heavy rains that began in early March 2025 have rapidly increased the water volume. This intense downpour has overwhelmed the existing drainage systems, causing water to overflow onto roads and residential areas. According to the Mayor of Bekasi, Tri Adhianto, water levels this time could reach up to 8 meters worse than the flooding incidents of 2016 and 2020. - Overflowing Water from Upstream
Upstream areas, particularly Bogor, also contribute to flooding in Bekasi. When heavy rains hit Bogor, the river discharge increases, causing the Bekasi River to overflow. This worsens the situation, especially when combined with heavy rainfall in Bekasi itself. - Inadequate Infrastructure
The incomplete construction of levees and drainage systems is another major factor contributing to the flooding. Many sections of the levees along the Bekasi River are either damaged or non-functional, making them unable to withstand the large water flow. The existing infrastructure remains insufficient to manage such a significant volume of water in a short period.
Most Affected Areas in Bekasi
Flooding is not evenly distributed throughout Bekasi. Some of the worst-hit areas include districts such as Jatiasih, Bekasi Timur, and Bekasi Utara. In Jatiasih, for instance, floodwaters have risen to three meters, submerging residential areas and forcing many families to evacuate to safer locations. Approximately 47 families, totaling 360 individuals, have been displaced and are now staying in evacuation centers.
What Are the Solutions?
Enhancing flood control infrastructure is crucial. This includes constructing stronger levees and improving drainage systems for better water management. Additionally, the government must educate the public on disaster mitigation strategies. Community involvement in the planning process is also essential to ensure that the implemented solutions effectively address their needs.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has warned that heavy rainfall is expected to continue until March 9, 2025. Therefore, staying vigilant against the risk of further flooding is extremely important. BMKG Chief Dwikorita Karnawati has urged the public to minimize outdoor activities during high-risk periods.
