Sumber Jejak Karbon bagi Kehidupan Sehari-hari

Jejak karbon merujuk pada jumlah emisi gas rumah kaca karbon yang dihasilkan oleh berbagai aktivitas manusia dalam kurun waktu tertentu. Gas rumah kaca yang paling umum adalah karbon dioksida (CO2), diikuti dengan gas penting lainnya seperti metana (CH4). Setiap aktivitas manusia dapat menghasilkan berbagai jenis gas tersebut dalam jumlah yang bervariasi. Menariknya, jejak karbon ini justru timbul dari tindakan sehari-hari kita, loh, Sobat EBT Heroes!

  • Penggunaan Kendaraan

Menurut IESR, sektor transportasi menjadi penyumbang terbesar kedua terhadap Gas Rumah Kaca (GRK) di Indonesia yang mencapai 23%. Saat ini, sebagian besar kendaraan menggunakan bahan bakar fosil, baik itu bensin maupun solar. Proses pembakaran bahan bakar fosil pada kendaraan—mobil, sepeda motor, dan pesawat terbang—menghasilkan emisi karbon dioksida (CO2) dan karbon monoksida (CO) yang dilepaskan ke dalam atmosfer.

  • Konsumsi Listrik dan Air

Meski tidak menghasilkan karbon secara langsung, konsumsi listrik dan proses pengolahan air bersih pada umumnya masih bergantung pada sumber energi konvensional, seperti batu bara. Pembangkit listrik tenaga batu bara, sebagai pengendali utama dalam sektor energi, memberikan kontribusi terbesar terhadap pelepas karbon ke lingkungan yang mencapai 35%.

  • Konsumsi Makanan

Tanpa disadari, setiap fase dalam siklus makanan menghasilkan jejak karbon, mulai dari pertanian dan peternakan, transportasi, pengolahan, hingga penanganan limbah makanan. Misalnya, daging impor memiliki jejak karbon besar yang berasal dari tahap peternakan, pengolahan daging, hingga distribusinya ke Indonesia.

Perhitungan jejak karbon direpresentasikan dalam ekivalen karbon dioksida (CO2-e) untuk seluruh jenis gas rumah kaca. Hal ini dihitung berdasarkan nilai jumlah emisi (E) yang diperoleh, dengan mengalikan jumlah aktivitas yang dilakukan (A) dengan faktor emisi untuk aktivitas tersebut (FE).
Jumlah Emisi (E) = Faktor Emisi (FE) x Aktivitas (A)

Secara khusus, perhitungan emisi untuk gas selain CO2 perlu dikonversi ke dalam CO2-e. Konversi tersebut mengikuti perhitungan berikut.

(Jumlah emisi gas rumah kaca) X (Indeks GWP atau Global Warming Potential)

Contoh:
1 kg gas metana (CH4) x 28 = 28 kg CO2-e

Saat ini, rata-rata jejak karbon setiap orang adalah 4 ton per tahun. Semakin tinggi indeks jejak karbon, semakin besar konsentrasi gas rumah kaca yang dilepaskan ke atmosfer. Ini akan menyebabkan dampak perubahan iklim dan peningkatan suhu bumi yang semakin signifikan. Untuk mencapai target IPCC dalam mencegah kenaikan suhu bumi sebesar 2°C pada 2050, sangat penting untuk menjaga agar rata-rata jejak karbon tetap di bawah 2 ton per tahun.

Dampak Tingginya Konsentrasi Jejak Karbon

Tingginya konsentrasi karbon di atmosfer tentu bukanlah hal baik dan justru menjadi awal dari malapetaka bagi kehidupan manusia. Karbon sebagai gas rumah kaca sendiri memiliki kemampuan menyimpan dan menahan panas sehingga gelombang panas terperangkap di bumi. Hal ini akan menyebabkan berbagai masalah, di antaranya:

  1. Peningkatan suhu bumi yang cukup signifikan berdampak pada timbulnya bencana alam, mulai curah hujan ekstrem, banjir, badai ekstrem, hingga kebakaran hutan.
  2. Kekeringan ekstrem di sejumlah daerah menyebabkan ketersediaan air menjadi langka dan sulit, terlebih air bersih, yang hingga saat ini masih minim akses di sejumlah daerah. Hal ini akan berdampak pada gangguan ekosistem dan ancaman hidup bagi manusia.
  3. Pencairan es di kutub utara akan semakin banyak dan menyebabkan peningkatan volume serta suhu lautan sendiri. Tentunya, hal ini mengancam kehidupan di pulau maupun pesisir yang akan tenggelam selayaknya fenomena di Kota Jakarta saat ini.
  4. Kepunahan sejumlah spesies baik flora maupun fauna yang disebabkan perubahan lingkungan ekstrim. Sejumlah fauna akan bermigrasi ke tempat lain dan sebagian flora yang tidak mampu bertahan akan punah. Produktivitas juga mungkin terjadi pada komoditas pangan baik itu hewan ternak, perikanan, bahkan tanaman pangan.
  5. Risiko kesehatan manusia juga dapat terpengaruh akibat meningkatnya suhu dan berbagai pencemar lingkungan. Penyebaran dan variasi penyakit akan meningkat melalui air kotor dan udara panas sehingga menyebabkan berbagai masalah kesehatan bahkan kematian bagi manusia.

  1. Menghemat penggunaan listrik dengan menggunakan barang berefisiensi kerja optimal dan mematikannya bila sedang tidak digunakan.
  2. Menghemat penggunaan air bersih dengan tidak membuangnya secara sia-sia dalam jumlah besar.
  3. Menggunakan transportasi umum sebagai upaya mengurangi jumlah kendaraan dan pembakaran bahan bakar fosil.
  4. Menghabiskan makanan (mengurangi foodwaste) dan mengonsumsi makanan berbasis lokal atau bahkan hasil produksi mandiri.
  5. Mengurangi jumlah limbah yang dihasilkan dengan menerapkan 3R sehingga kebutuhan energi pengolahan maupun penghasilan GRK dari limbah akan berkurang.

Langkah di atas mungkin terkesan kecil dan tidak berdampak besar secara angka. Akan tetapi, dengan komitmen yang tinggi dari setiap lapisan masyarakat maka kumulatif dampak yang dihasilkan akan signifikan. Oleh karena itu, yuk Sobat EBT Heroes, hitung dan kurangi jejak karbon pribadi-mu!
