  • Floods in Indonesia at the beginning of 2025 were caused by heavy rain and river overflow.
  • Central Java and East Java were the most affected areas.
  • Many people lost their homes, and infrastructure was damaged due to the floods.

At the beginning of 2025, Indonesia experienced a severe flood disaster, particularly in Central Java and East Java. Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow and levees to break, forcing many residents to evacuate from their homes. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued early warnings about high rainfall and the potential for flooding, which applied from February 1 to February 10, 2025, especially for Central Java and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

The floods that struck Indonesia at the beginning of this year are very concerning. From February 1 to February 10, extremely high rainfall caused rivers to overflow. Many people had to evacuate. Data from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) shows that more than 142,161 homes were submerged. That is an enormous number!

At the same time, there were also tidal floods. Tidal floods occur when seawater rises. This type of flooding affected several coastal areas, such as Medan and Jakarta. BMKG also mapped coastal regions that are at risk of tidal flooding due to the full moon on February 12, including the Riau Islands, Bangka Belitung Islands, West Sumatra, Banten, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, East Nusa Tenggara, South Kalimantan, North Sulawesi, North Maluku, and South Papua. All of this adds to the burden of communities that are already struggling.

The Impact

The impact of this flooding is extensive. Many people lost their lives, and some were injured. The damage to infrastructure is also substantial. Damaged public facilities make everything more difficult. Additionally, landslides also occurred. Water can damage ecosystems and our environment, which is very concerning.

We need to remember that disasters like this are not just local issues. They are significant problems that affect many people. Those who live in flood-prone areas must know what to do when a disaster strikes. Preparedness becomes very important.

Mitigation Efforts

The government has been working hard to provide emergency assistance. They are conducting evacuations to rescue people trapped in the floods. BNPB continues to remind the public to stay vigilant. This is a crucial step to protect oneself.

In addition, the government is also repairing damaged infrastructure. Bridges and roads that have been destroyed need to be fixed immediately so that people can return to their homes. Humanitarian aid is very important. When disasters strike, we all need to come together.

Efforts to raise awareness about climate change are also essential. We all need to understand that climate change can worsen extreme weather conditions. If we can prepare adequately, we might reduce the impact of disasters in the future.

Data and Statistics

According to BNPB data, the number of flood and landslide disasters has increased compared to last year. At the beginning of 2025, there have already been 298 flood and landslide incidents recorded. This is very concerning and shows that we need to do much more to prepare ourselves. Disaster preparedness must be a priority for everyone.

Advice for the Community

The public is encouraged to always monitor weather information from reliable sources like BMKG. This is very important so that we can know when disasters might occur. Additionally, maintaining a clean environment is also crucial. Do not litter! Blocked waste can obstruct drainage systems, which can worsen the risk of flooding.

We all have a responsibility to care for the environment and help one another. When disasters strike, we must unite and support each other.

The floods that struck Indonesia at the beginning of 2025 are very tragic and have brought significant impacts. We learn that high rainfall and river overflow are the main causes. Many people lost their homes, and infrastructure was damaged. The government and the public need to work together to provide assistance to flood victims, repair damaged infrastructure, and raise awareness about disaster risks and climate change. Let’s take care of the environment and help each other so that we can be better prepared for future disasters.
