Summary :
- According to him, PLN EPI plays an important role in maintaining the resilience and sustainability of Indonesia’s primary energy supply.
- PT PLN EPI Chairman Ivan Agung Faasantara said the company will supply biomass raw materials by planting Gamal type multifunctional energy crops (Gliricidia sepium) on 20 hectares of land in Buntoy village, Kahayan Hilir district, Prampisaur regency and 20 hectares of land in Rawa. Details of 160,000 seedlings planted on 80 hectares of land in Subur village, Kapuas Mulung regency, Kapuas local government division and 40,000 seedlings planted.
- In addition to the Gamal power plant, PT PLN Energy Primer Indonesia President and Director Iwan Agung Firstantara said in Tasikmalaya on Thursday that the approval will reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy transition by using biomass as co-firing fuel for PLTU, while improving the welfare of the surrounding community like Indigofera.
As a pillar of the energy transition, PLN maintains the supply of biomass raw materials
PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) remains committed to biomass as clean energy that contributes to the national economy and transition to sustainable energy.
PLN EPI Corporate Secretary Mamit Setiawan stated that the company is innovating to develop a biomass ecosystem that aligns with national economic priorities. This initiative supports the co-firing program, which aims to reduce coal consumption in Indonesia’s steam power plants (PLTUs). PLN EPI remains dedicated to ensuring the sustainability of biomass development within society.
“PLN EPI is fostering effective communication with stakeholders to highlight its efforts in maintaining the primary energy supply chain. This initiative supports a stable electricity supply for all levels of society,” Mamit said.
Mamit stated that biomass development serves as an eco-friendly energy source while also positively impacting the local economy. It enhances the welfare of farmers and benefits surrounding communities.
Biomass derived from agricultural and forestry waste significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions. This contribution supports Indonesia in meeting its internationally agreed emission reduction targets.
According to him, PLN EPI plays a vital role in ensuring Indonesia’s energy resilience and sustainability. As a cornerstone of the national energy supply chain, the company is dedicated to providing stable and sustainable energy. This commitment ensures reliable and equitable electricity access for communities across Indonesia, including remote areas.
PLN EPI is leveraging a communication program called Sinema (Synergy of Media and Biomass) to support the campaign. This innovative program earned the Merit Award in the Best Media Relations Program category, under the subcategory Impactful Public Relations Award (IMPRA), at the 2024 International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Awards.

This Power Plant Will Enable PLTU to Reduce its Consumption of Coal as an Energy Source
PLN Group has been working to provide biomass feedstock aimed at reducing coal consumption in power plants (PLTUs) in the Kapuas and Prampisaur regencies of Central Kalimantan.
PT PLN EPI Chairman Ivan Agung Faasantara stated that the company will supply biomass feedstock by planting Gamal energy crops (Gliricidia sepium) on 20 hectares in Buntoy village, Kahayan Hilir district, Prampisaur regency, and 20 hectares in Rawa. Additionally, 160,000 seedlings will be planted across 80 hectares in Subur village, Kapuas Mulung regency, while 40,000 seedlings will be planted on 20 hectares in Buntoy village.
“This collaboration to cultivate multifunctional crops involves eight farmer groups in Rawa Subur village and three farmer groups in Buntoy village,” Ivan said.
The program is a continuation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between PLN Holding, PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI), PT PLN Nusantara Power (PLN NP), the Government of Kuala Kapuas and Plan Pisau, and LPPM, University of Palangkaraya.
According to Ivan, implementing gamal cultivation as part of the TJSL program reflects the application of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles. This initiative will have several positive impacts, including the utilization of non-productive land, the availability of gamal leaves as nutritious animal feed, environmental protection in support of NZE 2060, and the provision of biomass feedstock for co-incineration in PLTUs.
Indigofera for PLN Biomass in Tasikmalaya

In addition to the Gamal power plant, PT PLN Energy Primer Indonesia President and Director Iwan Agung Firstantara stated in Tasikmalaya on Thursday that this initiative will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The energy transition will be supported by using biomass as co-firing fuel for PLTUs. This program is also expected to improve the welfare of surrounding communities. One example of a potential biomass source is Indigofera.
Indigofera is a legume widely recognized for its nutritious and high-quality livestock feed. The tree is medium-sized and characterized by dense foliage, enabling it to produce a significant quantity of leaves.
Indigofera is not only highly nutritious but also an economically viable source of animal feed. This plant can significantly reduce feed costs by providing a high yield of nutritious leaves. For instance, one hectare of Indigofera can sustain approximately 10 cows, compared to only one cow when using the same area planted with grass. This demonstrates Indigofera’s high efficiency and superior productivity compared to other green forages.
