Operation of New Natural Gas-Fired Power Plant: PLTMG Sumbagut 2 Peaker 250 MW

The PLTMG Sumbagut 2 Peaker 250 MW power plant was developed in response to the increasing base load electricity demand in Sumatra, which has seen an average annual growth rate of 6.2%. This 250 MW power plant is an expansion project from the previous PLTMG (UP Arun 190 MW), which primarily supplies electricity to the Sumatra region. The construction of the PLTMG Sumbagut 2 Peaker aims to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Sumatra grid.

This power plant operates using natural gas (LNG) and features the latest and first-of-its-kind Gas Engine Power Plant technology in Indonesia—Wärtsilä W18V50SG—with a performance efficiency of up to 40.75% as per commissioning data under single-fuel operation. It is also equipped with a Low NOx Burner to minimize exhaust gas emissions. Thanks to its high efficiency, the GHG emissions from this plant are lower than those of similar units.

The electricity produced is transmitted to the 150 kV grid, supplying approximately 6% of the regional power system—equivalent to serving around 638,687 residents.
