Environmental Education and Its Role in Solving Environmental Problems

  • Environmental education important because we learn to safe the world so that the world can be a better place.
  • Environmental education is essential in preserving and improving the world’s environment.
  • We are one with the earth, we are not dominant over it.

Environmental education is a process that allows individuals to explore environmental issues, engage in problem-solving, and take action to improve the environment. Environmental Education (EE) is a methodology in which people pick up familiarity with their surroundings and secure learning, abilities, values, experiences, and passion, all of which will empower them to act – separately and aggregately – to take care of present future environmental issues. It is the study of relationships and interactions between natural and human systems. In short, environmental education is provided to better understand the world around them and know how to take care of it properly so that the world can be a better place.

Environmental education generally refers to curriculum and programs that aim to teach people about the natural world and particularly about ecosystems’ work. Environmental education programs often aim to change people’s perceptions about the natural world’s value and teach how to change ecological behavior, such as getting people to recycle or build eco-friendly dwellings.

Environmental education does not advocate a particular viewpoint or course of action. Instead, ecological education teaches individuals how to weigh various sides of an issue through critical thinking, enhancing their problem-solving and decision-making skills.

In the 1960s, awareness of the negative impacts of humankind on the natural environment rose, and environmental policies and programs worldwide were developed. People became more aware of their mark on the environment in their everyday life and, in parallel, their influence on the way their local community is run.

The idea emerged that a citizen could influence public decisions that impact one’s quality of life (at least in democratic countries). That is when the need for environmental education emerged, covering two aspects: inform people of ecological systems and educate them to adopt a more responsible attitude towards the environment.

Environmental Education provides a better understanding that we, as human beings, are part of an evolving ecosystem in which all life systems (plants, animals, air, water, soil, minerals, etc.) are connected in every significant way; we are one with the earth, we are not dominant over it. Through EE, people should understand full well that if they destroy or alter one link in the chain of life systems, it will damage other links, weaken the life support system, and threaten the survival of all earth’s species, including people and all the planets as well.
