Hydroelectric Power is Useful for Industrial in Kalimantan and Papua

Hydroelectric Power Plants
  • Hydroelectric power plants in Kaltara and Papua are targeted to meet industrial electricity needs.
  • The hydroelectric power plant on the Kayan River, North Kalimantan, was built by the government with a total power generation capacity of 9,000 MW.
  • The hydroelectric power plant will also be built on the Mamberamo River, Sarmi Regency, Papua Province with potential energy reaches 24,000 MW.

Hydroelectric power is one of the government’s choices in pursuing the achievement of the new renewable energy mix. This is done by the government by utilizing the potential of the river as a location for development. Papua and North Kalimantan are the locations for the two main hydro power projects.

President Joko Widodo said that the potential for hydro power plants is quite large in Indonesia. Government data records that the total rivers in the country reach 4,400 large and medium scale rivers, however it is recognized that the need for investment in this sector is quite large.

Hydroelectric power plants in Kaltara and Papua are targeted to meet industrial electricity needs. The government is currently maximizing the development of hydroelectric power plants as an effort to reduce carbon emissions in the context of mitigating the impact of climate change.

The hydroelectric power plant on the Kayan River, North Kalimantan, was built by the government with a total power generation capacity of 9,000 MW. This hydroelectric power plant will supply clean energy for Indonesia’s Green Industrial Estates. The investment is as much as USD 130 billion for the construction of the hydroelectric power plant.

In addition to the Kayan River, a hydroelectric power plant will also be built on the Mamberamo River, Sarmi Regency, Papua Province. The potential energy generated from this hydroelectric power plant reaches 24,000 MW. With this capacity, it is considered sufficient to support industrialization in Papua.

The plan to build a hydroelectric power plant has attracted global attention. The use of clean energy is currently a world concern. No less than 163 companies from 23 countries observe the development of clean energy use. Even in Europe, there are additional tax rules for products that are processed but ignore the environment. The use of clean energy sources also determines the future of investment in Indonesia. This is because investors will only invest and receive products made from clean energy.

In order to achieve the target of using 29 percent clean energy by 2030, the government is pushing to accelerate the transition to the use of renewable energy. Utilization of renewable energy can be done by developing power plants. Currently, 15 percent of the new power plants have been installed or equivalent to 11.56 thousand GW of the target set by the government.

Currently, solar power plants are the largest renewable energy source with a potential of 92 thousand GW. However, this number is currently not optimal. For this reason, he requested that the development of this solar power plant be developed more aggressively.

The realization of the acceleration of the use of PLTS must also be supported by business actors, local governments and financial institutions because if we examine more deeply the use of solar power plants, it can also be used towards the net zero emission program in 2060. Apart from that, it can also move the carbon tax scheme while creating jobs.

Meanwhile, the contribution of hydroelectric power plants currently reaches 180 thousand gigawatts. For this reason, a roadmap towards carbon neutrality also needs to be prepared again. Hydroelectric power can play a role at the upstream and downstream levels. Then, the existence of this hydropower plant can also produce carbon trading.

The government continues to be committed to reducing carbon emissions by making a green energy transition. Currently, oil production has also decreased and the construction sector has increased. On the other hand, the import trade balance in the oil and gas sector has also begun to decline.
