- Ada lima variasi sumber energi yang dapat dieksploitasi dari lautan untuk menghasilkan listrik, termasuk gelombang laut, angin laut, arus laut, panas dari laut, serta energi pasang surut.
Lautan, selain berperan sebagai penjaga keanekaragaman hayati dan ekosistem bagi makhluk hidup, juga memiliki potensi energi yang besar. Hal ini disebabkan karena sekitar 70 persen permukaan Bumi terdiri dari lautan.
Potensi energi di laut juga bersifat terbarukan, karena akan terus tersedia selama bumi masih ada. Mulai dari energi gelombang, energi perbedaan temperatur, energi tinggi air laut akibat pasang surut, hingga energi arus laut.
Indonesia adalah salah satu negara di dunia yang memiliki wilayah laut terbesar. Sekitar dua per tiga wilayah Indonesia adalah laut. Indonesia memiliki pantai kedua terpanjang di dunia setelah Kanada. Hal tersebut menjadi keuntungan bagi Indonesia dari segi besarnya potensi energi laut.
Selain itu, resiko dari pemanfaatan energi laut cenderung lebih kecil resikonya jika dibandingkan dengan pemanfaatan energi dari sumber-sumber yang lain. Negara-negara maju seperti Jepang dan Korea, saat ini juga mulai beralih memanfaatkan energi yang bersumber dari laut untuk mencukupi kebutuhan energi mereka.
Jepang sendiri tengah melakukan uji coba pemanfaatan sumber energi laut untuk Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Arus Laut (PLTAL). Mantan kepala Balai Pengkajian dan Penelitian Hidrodinamika-LHI BPPT Surabaya, Dr. Erwandi, mengatakan bahwa 15 selat di Indonesia berpotensi untuk pemanfaatan energi laut.
Total ada lima jenis energi dari laut yang bisa dimanfaatkan sebagai penghasil energi listrik seperti gelombang air laut, angin laut, arus laut, panas laut dan energi gelombang pasang surut.
Energi Gelombang Air Laut
Teknologi yang mengubah energi gelombang laut menjadi energi listrik dikenal sebagai Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Gelombang Laut (PLTGL). Cara kerja PLTGL dimulai dengan menangkap potensi energi gelombang laut menggunakan mesin konversi energi gelombang laut.
Dalam proses konversi ini, energi kinetik yang terdapat dalam gelombang laut ditangkap dan diteruskan ke turbin. Turbin kemudian berputar, mengubah energi kinetik dari gelombang laut menjadi energi mekanik. Selanjutnya, putaran turbin disalurkan ke generator, yang menghasilkan energi listrik. Selanjutnya,energi listrik yang dihasilkan dapat dialirkan ke jaringan listrik.
Energi Angin Laut
Energi angin laut mengandalkan angin yang bertiup di atas laut untuk memutar turbin angin. Kelebihan energi angin laut adalah kecepatan angin yang lebih tinggi di laut daripada di daratan, sehingga dapat menghasilkan lebih banyak energi. Energi angin laut menggunakan angin di atas laut untuk menggerakkan turbin angin yang selanjutnya akan dikonversikan menjadi energi listrik.

Energi Arus Air
Energi arus laut merupakan hasil dari gerakan horizontal massa air laut. Arus laut muncul karena efek pasang surut dan variasi suhu serta salinitas air laut. Energi yang terdapat dalam arus laut dapat diubah menjadi energi listrik melalui penggunaan pembangkit listrik tenaga arus laut dengan turbin yang ditempatkan di dasar laut untuk menangkap energi kinetik yang dihasilkan oleh arus laut.
Prinsip kerja pembangkit ini adalah memanfaatkan energi kinetik dari arus laut untuk menggerakkan turbin. Putaran turbin oleh arus laut kemudian digunakan untuk menggerakkan generator, menghasilkan listrik. Biasanya, potensi arus laut yang besar terdapat di selat-selat.
Energi Panas Laut
Energi panas laut menggunakan perbedaan suhu antara permukaan dan kedalaman laut untuk menghasilkan energi listrik. Teknologi ini dikenal dengan nama pembangkit listrik tenaga panas laut atau Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC).
Singkatnya cara kerja dari OTEC adalah Suhu permukaan air laut yang lebih panas digunakan untuk mendidihkan fluida kerja dengan titik didih di bawah air. Fluida kerja menjadi gas, memutar turbin, dan menghasilkan listrik. Uap kemudian dikondensasi di bawah laut, kembali menjadi cair, dan dialirkan kembali ke permukaan untuk siklus berulang.
Gelombang Pasang Surut (Tidal)
Energi pasang surut merupakan bentuk energi yang memanfaatkan pergerakan air laut yang dipengaruhi oleh gravitasi bulan dan matahari. Energi ini bisa diubah menjadi energi listrik dengan menggunakan generator yang didesain khusus.
Dilansir dari laman tirto.id, Cara kerja energi pasang surut laut didasarkan pada prinsip teknologi energi angin yang telah lebih dahulu berkembang. Prinsipnya adalah mengubah energi kinetik dari arus laut menjadi energi rotasi dan akhirnya energi listrik. Teknologi ini dapat dilakukan melalui berbagai metode, seperti tidal barrages, tidal fences, dan tidal turbines.
Jika pemanfaatannya energi laut dioptimalkan, adalah sebuah keniscayaan bisa mengganti energi fosil yang mencemari bumi.
