As the heart of the economy and the driving force behind Indonesia’s energy transition, PT PLN (Persero) will showcase eight company commitments to reach the 2060 Net Zero Emission (NZE) target at the International Conference on State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) on October 17-18.

Pahala N. Mansury, Deputy Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) I, strongly supports PLN’s efforts to achieve net zero emissions by 2060, as well as low-carbon development in accordance with the Paris Agreement and Indonesia’s greenhouse gas emission reduction target of up to 31.89 percent by 2030. This is also consistent with the government’s Updated National Determined Contribution (NDC), which was released in September ahead of COP27 next month.

According to Pahala, PLN is committed to decarbonization and driving the energy transition, including by increasing the use of coal power plant assets and accelerating the development of new and renewable energy (EBT) to increase the percentage of NRE in the energy mix.

Meanwhile, PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo explained that PLN has launched eight initiatives as part of the global commitment to reduce carbon emissions. He emphasized that, in conjunction with the SOE International Conference, PLN would explain to the delegates PLN’s strategic steps in maximizing technology and innovation in reducing carbon emissions and encouraging the energy transition. PLN also ensures that it will continue to provide dependable and clean electricity to stimulate economic growth through collaboration.

While getting to know more deeply with Indonesia’s commitment (Makin Tahu Indonesia), these are some of PLN’s efforts to accelerate the achievement of the Net Zero Emission target include:

To begin, PLN will phase out the power plant. This step is regarded as the most effective way to reduce carbon emissions in the electricity sector while reducing the use of coal as a fossil fuel.

Second, PLN is also implementing biomass co-firing technology in existing fossil-fueled power plants to reduce the use of fossil energy and the resulting emissions. The community’s economy will benefit from the people’s energy economy movement, which has been carried out by business enterprises and local governments through co-firing.

Third, PLN will speed up the construction of clean energy-based power plants. PLN will add 3 GW of EBT-based plants until 2025, for a total additional installed capacity of 20.9 GW from 2021 to 2030.

Fourth, PLN offers Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) services as a facility that BUMN, government, retail, business, and industry stakeholders can use to cooperatively use EBT-based electrical energy.

Fifth, PLN supports the electric vehicle ecosystem by aggressively developing collaboration schemes with partners via the SPKLU and SPBKLU development franchises with banks, malls, offices, the private sector, transportation service operators, motorcycle dealers, and others, resulting in thousands of SPKLUs and SPBKLUs facilitated by PLN.

Sixth, PLN is developing Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology in order to absorb large amounts of carbon emissions in PLTU and PLTG.

Seventh, through the implementation of hydrogen and ammonia co-firing, PLN is also developing hydrogen technology to reduce emissions from fossil fuel plants.

Finally, PLN created the Smart Grid and Control System technology. Through digitalisation in each line of business practices, this application will increase system efficiency while lowering emissions.
