Industri perkebunan sawit saat ini tumbuh sangat pesat, terlebih di Indonesia bagian barat. Salah satunya adalah pulau Sumatra, dari luasnya pulau tersebut hanya ada satu provinsi yang tidak menjadi sentra kelapa sawit, yaitu Kepulauan Riau. Peningkatan pesat perindustrian kelapa sawit tersebut tidak menutup kemungkinan akan ada banyak limbah sisa yang terbuang begitu saja.

Ada banyak bagian dari limbah sawit yang dimanfaatkan tidak hanya untuk kepentingan pribadi, tetapi juga untuk kepentingan umum. Bagian limbah sawit yang dapat dimanfaatkan di antaranya yaitu batang, sabut, bungkil, cangkang, dan tandan kosong.

Limbah Batang, Sabut, dan Bungkil

Limbah yang pertama yaitu batang pohon sawit, limbah yang sudah sering dijumpai pada perkebunan sawit. Batang sawit  sampai saat ini belum banyak dimanfaatkan, bila ada hanya untuk memperkaya nutrisi tanah pada proses pemangkasan pelepah tanaman, dan sebagai sumber bahan organik tanah pada area – area tertentu. Upaya pemanfaatan limbah atau biomassa batang kayu ini perlu dilakukan, untuk menghindari efek negatif bagi lingkungan dan masyarakat sekitar kebun melalui penerapan program produksi bersih melalui proses reduce, reuse, recycle and recover  untuk meningkatkan nilai ekonomi dari limbah industri sawit. Batang kelapa sawit yang sudah tua tidak produktif lagi, dapat dimanfaatkan menjadi produk yang bernilai tinggi. Batang kelapa sawit tersebut dapat dibuat sebagai bahan perabot rumah tangga seperti mebel, furniture, atau sebagai papan partikel. Dapat juga dimanfaatkan untuk Papan laminasi atau Sandwich Laminated Lumber (SLL) yang dapat dimanfaatkan untuk panel lantai, dinding, komponen furniture, pengemas dan lain-lain.

Limbah yang kedua yaitu sabut, limbah ini dapat dimanfaatkan untuk diolah menjadi silika, yang mana nantinya silika ini dapat dimanfaatkan untuk silika gel yang dapat digunakan untuk menyerap air. Sabut sawit juga dapat digunakan untuk pulp kertas bubur untuk pembuatan kertas, maupun papan partikel.

Lalu terdapat juga limbah bungkil, Bungkil inti sawit (BIS) merupakan salah satu hasil samping pengolahan inti sawit dengan kadar 45-46% dari inti sawit. Bungkil Inti Sawit dapat digunakan untuk pakan ternak, namun memiliki palatabilitas yang rendah sehingga menyebabkan kurang cocok untuk ternak monogastrik dan lebih sering diberikan kepada ruminansia terutama sapi perah.  Bungkil inti sawit biasanya dapat diberikan sebesar 30% dalam pakan ternak, namun dapat digunakan sampai sebesar 40% dalam konsentrat untuk penggemukan ternak yang ditambah dengan 20% molases.

Limbah Cangkang

Cangkang merupakan limbah yang kerap kali didengar bila berbicara mengenai kelapa sawit. Cangkang sawit memiliki banyak sekali manfaat salah satunya yaitu, cangkang sawit baik untuk bahan arang karena cangkang sawit memiliki kandungan zat lignoselulosa, sehingga arang yang dihasilkan memiliki kualitas tinggi. Selain itu cangkang sawit berguna sebagai bahan bakar Boiler, yakni mengubah limbah menjadi uap yang dapat menggerakan mesin turbin. Selain itu, berfungsi pula untuk mengoperasikan segala mesin yang berbasis uap. Tekanan api yang dihasilkan juga lebih memiliki tingkat daya panas yang maksimal dan lebih besar. Cangkang sawit memiliki kelebihan sebagai bahan bakar yang ramah terhadap lingkungan karena tidak mengandung sulfur sehingga tidak menghasilkan gas pencemar. Cangkang Sawit dapat pula dijadikan sebagai campuran pakan ternak, dimana yang dimanfaatkan ialah bagian lapisan luar (kulit daging) kelapa sawit. Perpaduan antara kulit luar dengan tempurung  dapat mempercepat tingkat metabolisme tubuh sekaligus pertumbuhan binatang-binatang, khususmya sapi, kambing, bebek, ikan sampai dengan ternak ayam.

Limbah Tandan Kosong

Tandan kosong juga merupakan salah satu limbah dari kelapa sawit. Tandan kosong kelapa sawit (TKKS) adalah salah satu produk sampingan dari industri pengolahan kelapa sawit yang memiliki potensi yang cukup besar untuk dapat dikembangkan.  Selama ini TKKS telah dimanfaatkan sebagai pupuk, bahan alternatif untuk mengisi rongga jok mobil dan membuat matras atau kasur, briket, briket, dan bahan baku pembuatan kertas.  Kandungan unsur hara makro (N, P, K, Mg, Ca) pada limbah tandan kosong sawit cukup tinggi sehingga bagus untuk digunakan sebagai pupuk organic (kompos). Pupuk organik ini dapat dimanfaatkan untuk optimalisasi lahan perkebunan kelapa sawit dengan pola intercropping antara tanaman kelapa sawit yang masih muda dengan tanaman jagung. Selain untuk pupuk, serat TTKS juga dapat  dimanfaatkan sebagai material tekstil yang memiliki karakter khusus dan mempunyai nilai ekonomi yang cukup tinggi. Tandan kosong kelapa sawit memiliki ciri khas visual seperti kekuatan dan  panjang yang cukup stabil, kemudahan menyerap warna, dan serat yang dapat diurai menjadi ukuran yang kecil. Untuk itu maka tandan kosong kelapa sawit berpeluang untuk dikembangkan sebagai struktur produk untuk aksesoris fashion yang tidak kontak langsung dengan kulit, kalaupun ada kontak langsung tidak terlalu sering, karena serat tandan kosong kelapa sawit memiliki karakteristik serat yang keras dan berserabut.

Banyak sekali bagian dari kelapa sawit yang seharusnya dapat dimanfaatkan untuk kehidupan sehari – hari. Pengoptimalan limbah kelapa sawit tersebut justru menambah nilai jual dan juga nilai ekonomis dari sebuah limbah yang biasanya hanya dibuang dan tidak dimanfaatkan secara baik dan benar.
