Germany will be Launching Wind Power Plant in Mid-Ocean

Germany is a country that has always developed the use of wind energy. In this renewable energy transition period, wind energy is the right solution to generate electricity from environmentally friendly sources. One of the developments is the construction of an offshore wind turbine field. The wind turbine, named Arcadis Ost 1, is a 257 MW offshore wind farm developed by Parkwind Ost GmbH. The wind farm will be located in the Baltic Sea, northeast of the German island of Rügen.

Arcadis Ost 1 is a wind farm in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Parkwind, 19 kilometers from the island of Rügen in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The turbines will cover 29 km2 and add 257 megawatts to expand the country’s offshore capacity. And these offshore wind farms also create enough green energy to power about 290,000 households.

The project is slated for completion by the end of 2023. And the project is committed to the highest standards and will use state-of-the-art construction methods for the installation of some of the largest wind turbines in the world. The project is expected to reach financial closure in 2020, while turbine installation is slated for late 2022. Arcadis Ost 1 was one of Parkwind’s first international projects in close collaboration with German authorities allowing offshore wind to become the fastest growing renewable resource in the country.

With water depths of up to 45 m and challenging ground conditions, Parkwind will use the floating turbine installation method. This is one of the most significant innovations in offshore wind energy. It also opens up new offshore development opportunities around the world.

The Arcadis Ost 1 wind turbine will be the first offshore wind farm to use a floating ship to assemble a wind turbine generator. The Arcadis Ost 1 project was originally developed by KNK Wind, which was acquired by Parkwind in May 2018.

Arcadis Ost 1 will be located off the coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in northern Germany on the Baltic Sea. It will be located within a 12 nautical mile zone, 20 km northeast of Rugen Island in the Westlich Arkonasee cluster. The offshore wind farm will include 27 MHI Vestas V174-9.5MW turbines, which will cover an area of 29km2 and be installed on a monopile foundation.

This project will use a floating installation method to prevent ground interaction. Then also to reduce the risk compared to traditional jack-up installations. This method also reduces installation time and offshore wind energy costs.

The MHI Vestas V174-9.5MW turbine has the largest commercially proven rotor size of 174m. Based on the V164 turbine platform, the turbine has a sweep area of 23,779 m2. With a rated power of 9.5MW, the turbine has an optimal rotor-to-generator ratio. The turbine tip heights are 110 m and 197 m, respectively. The nacelle is 21m long, 9m wide, and 9m high, while each blade weighs 35 t.

The floating mounting method developed for this project ensures a secure and highly reliable blade assembly with full blade control. The deck of the floating ship will house all turbine components. On the floating ship, a dummy tower will serve as a stable platform for the nacelle and blade assembly.

The WTG tower will first be lifted onto a pre-installed turbine foundation. The nacelle will then be lifted onto the dummy tower to attach the blades.

The wind farm will be connected to Germany’s high-voltage grid via an offshore transformer platform, which will deliver electricity to the mainland. The 50Hertz transmission, a transmission systems operator based in Germany, will develop a platform to connect the Arcadis Ost 1 and Baltic Eagle wind power plants to Germany’s high-voltage grid.

The Ostwind 2 project will include the installation of three 220kV subsea cable systems (OST-2-1, OST-2-2, and OST-2-3) with a combined capacity of 750MW. The cable system corridor will follow the coastal seas of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

The renewable power generated by the wind farm will be converted to 380kV by the transformer substation in Lubmin (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) before being fed to the 50Hz transmission network.
