Did You Know Kites can be a Source of Wind Energy?

  • Researchers from Europe and the United States are developing the most recent and new potential sources of wind energy, namely kites.
  • According to Florian Bauer as Co CEO and Chief Technology Officer at Kitekraft, the kite method as a source of wind energy for power generation is very cheap and easy in making it, and has high efficiency.
  • The way kites work is very simple in producing a source of electrical energy.

Wind is a source of renewable energy because the wind will continue to blow as long as the sun shines. Wind energy is an energy source that can be converted into mechanical energy to generate work. The use of wind energy has been started since the 7th BC by the Persians, namely by making the world’s first windmill. These windmills are used to grind rice, pump water, chop wood, and produce other forms of mechanical energy.

Currently wind turbines are used to convert wind energy into electrical energy. Wind energy is a renewable and eco-friendly energy source, so many countries in this world such as Germany, Denmark, India, China, and the United States of America build wind turbines as an additional source of electrical power.

In Indonesia, wind energy sources have begun to utilize by installation of Wind Power Plant in Sidrap which was inaugurated by President Joko Widodo in 2018. Wind energy power plants can convert wind energy into electricity by using a wind turbine or windmill as a generator.

However, not only wind turbines can be used as wind energy power plants. Currently, kites have the potential as a source of wind energy to generate electricity. How could it be ?

Researchers from Europe and the United States are developing the most recent and new potential sources of wind energy, namely kites. Kites are considered effective as a source of wind energy, because they can be at an altitude where the wind blows fastest. The use of kites up to a height of 200 meters is believed to provide much greater and more stable electrical energy compared to the use of wind turbines. The aerial energy system can reach altitudes of up to 800 meters, well above the windmills of about 300 meters. Theoretically, wind energy can generate 4.5 times greater than that collected on land.

As a source of wind energy for generating electricity, kites can be used for agricultural areas that still rely on conventional wind turbine towers as a source of electrical energy.

According to Florian Bauer as Co CEO and Chief Technology Officer at Kitekraft, the kite method as a source of wind energy for power generation is very cheap and easy in making it, and has high efficiency. Kites also have a low level of carbon emissions because they do not use conventional energy in their installation, so they are eco-friendly.

The way kites work is very simple in producing a source of electrical energy. The principle is like playing a kite, the higher the kite is, the more stable the wind that blows. All the energy received is then processed through a computerized system in the kite. However, because it is currently still in the experimental stage, the kite must overcome technological, commercial, and safety challenges. In this case, the use of kites is expected not to disturb other living creatures in the sky and the surrounding community. Especially from a visual and auditory perspective, it is feared that the kite will cause disturbing noises when working.

Almost the same way has actually been done by a company in Germany, SkySails Power. It’s just that they use parachutes instead of kites. The parachute was mounted 800 meters from the surface. Over the past two months, the company says, it has produced 100 kilowatts which is usually enough to power up to 50 homes. It’s still very small compared to a wind turbine that can produce 2.75 megawatts. It’s just that the SkySails Powers parachute has high mobility. So it is very easy to use in areas not covered by wind turbines.
